Long, long ago, there was an honest and kind-hearted young man named Niu Lang (the Cowhand). His parents died when he was a child, and he lived by herding cattle and farming.
很久以前，有个忠厚善良的年轻人叫牛郎，从小父母双亡，靠放牛、耕田为生。
One day, Zhi Nu (the Weaver Maid), a fairy from heaven, fell in love with him. She came down to earth and married him. He farmed in the fields and she wove at home, and they had a boy and a girl.
一天，天上的织女爱上了牛郎，来到人间与他成了亲。牛郎种田，织女织布，生活幸福，还有了一儿一女。
But the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens found out and took the Weaver Maid back to heaven. With the help of a celestial cow, the Cowhand flew up with his children to find her. Just as he was about to catch up, the Queen Mother drew a line with her golden hairpin, and a great river appeared between them.
王母娘娘发现后，把织女带回了天上。牛郎借助神牛，带着儿女飞上天去追赶，眼看就要追上时，王母娘娘用金簪一划，一条天河出现在他们中间。
Their loyalty touched the magpies. Thousands of magpies flew together and formed a bridge, so that the couple could meet. The Queen Mother was finally moved and allowed them to meet once a year, on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. That day is called Qi Xi (Double Seventh).
忠贞的爱情感动了喜鹊，成千上万只喜鹊搭起一座桥，让两人相会。王母娘娘最终也被打动，允许他们每年农历七月初七相聚，这一天就是七夕。
